What Are the Benefits of Mandelic Acid?

Mandelic acid is a skincare ingredient we don’t hear much about. We are more familiar with its cousins like salicylic acid (BHA), and the more common alpha-hydroxy acids like lactic acid, glycolic acid and malic acid.  Mandelic acid is derived from almonds and is a key player in products like our Clearer + Calmer Exfoliant Lotion.

Whilst the word “acid” conjures up all sorts of visions of redness and face peeling, the facts are much more friendly. Dr Leslie Baumann, skin guru and dermatologist extraordinaire is a big fan and credits acids like mandelic, with collagen building powers. But using products with some mandelic acid is great for acne and sensitive skin too. Mandelic acid is even gentler than lactic acid. Its molecular weight is the highest of any AHA, so it penetrates the skin more gradually and consistently.

Like other AHAs, an exfoliation serum can be used to treat dullness and uneven texture and tone. Mandelic acid contains antimicrobial effects that may be useful for non-inflammatory, non-cystic acne as well as having the ability to decrease pigmentation. Using mandelic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, peptides, Manuka honey, prebiotics and other skin nourishing ingredients together means that a great chemical exfoliant is priceless for skin health.

Chemical exfoliants have the following skincare benefits:

  • Gently resurfaces skin, unblocks pores and gives a boost of natural moisture
  • Pre/postbiotic rebalances the skin microbiome and reduces redness, irritation and flaking
  • Reduces redness and lesions, aids healing process, decongests, normalises oil and pore size
  • Potent combination of anti-inflammatory exfoliants, antibacterial and skin renewing actives
  • Refines and moisturises skin while preventing breakouts.
  • No redness or skin damage from harsh scrubbing.

If you haven’t made the switch yet, what are you waiting for? Check out our Clearer + Calmer Exfoliant Lotion.
