Why is Zinc and Titanium Important in UV Protection?

Why is Zinc and Titanium Important in UV Protection

Zinc and titanium in skincare products are to protect the skin from sun’s damaging rays and that makes them some of the most important key ingredients in every skincare wardrobe. Protection should be applied all year round, regardless of how sunny it is. UV radiation can be damaging even on cloudy and grey days, as studies show that when it’s gloomy, up to 80% of sun’s UV radiation still reaches the earth. Here we discuss the advantages of using products like our Hydra UV Protect and Suntint.

There are two types of UV radiation – UVA and UVB. UVB rays are mainly responsible for sunburn (think “B” for Burn) while UVA rays can cause significant and long-term damage because they can get deeper into the skin.

Chemical UV protection ingredients, like Avobenzone and Octisalate, absorb UV rays and stop them from penetrating the skin. However, research shows that these ingredients can cause allergic reactions or irritation, they also don’t prevent pigmentation. Some types of chemical sunscreen can only protect from UVA, others only UVB, and some offer protection against both. This is why we choose zinc and titanium which are physical blocks to prevent the UV radiation from reaching the skin.

Physical block ingredients, stop the rays before they penetrate the skin. These ingredients include the minerals Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide that reflect the sun’s UV rays and reduce the stimulation of the cells in the skin that cause freckles and age spots and this is, in fact, the primary cosmetic advantage in comparison to chemical sunscreens. Physical blocks are also more suitable for people with sensitive, redness-prone skin and are widely recommended for children.

The texture of mineral skin protection products is usually the main concern that comes to mind. This type are known to be a bit thicker and heavier but nowadays, their formulations are much more sophisticated and easy to apply and wear, thanks to lighter and more sheer finish.

There are two products in the range of Science Skincare with this physical protection. Hydra UV Protect defends skin against premature ageing with the power of antioxidants. It also provides skin rejuvenation, brightening and hydration; it’s non-comedogenic and non-irritating. All skin types can use it and it’s especially beneficial for people with dry, dehydrated and sensitive skin.

If you’re looking for tinted protection, Suntint Protect comes in three shades – light, medium and dark. It’s just as calming and protecting while helping to reduce pigmentation.
